Vishnu-sahasranāma-style Japa: Vishnu as Cosmic Cause and Inner Self
Antaryāmin
Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Afterlife Stage: Pretayoni
Concept: Buddhi-cetas-prāṇa-viyoga: awareness, intellect, and consciousness are not permanent possessions of the body; their withdrawal reveals bodily inertness.
Vedantic Theme: Distinction between antaḥkaraṇa (buddhi/citta) and ātman; the witnessing self is not identical with fluctuating cognition or breath.
Application: Practice mindfulness of mind’s impermanence; cultivate sāttvika buddhi through study and devotion; prepare for death with steady remembrance rather than reliance on mental faculties.
Primary Rasa: karuna
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana Pretakalpa: mind and prāṇa leaving the body (nearby verses in 1.15); Garuda Purana: subtle body (liṅga-śarīra) discussions in afterlife narrative portions
This verse highlights that when prāṇa departs, the body is left devoid of awareness, intellect, and consciousness—marking death as the withdrawal of life-force and inner faculties.
By stating that awareness, mind, and prāṇa are no longer present in the body, it implies the living principle (subtle being) has separated—setting the stage for the post-death journey described elsewhere in the Garuda Purana.
It encourages detachment from the perishable body and motivates ethical living and remembrance of the self beyond bodily functions, especially when performing or supporting end-of-life rites.
