Narratorial/ritual instruction within the Garuḍa Purāṇa (teaching context traditionally framed as Śrī Viṣṇu instructing Garuḍa)
Concept: Śuddhi (purification) + arcana + nāma-mantra: repeated obeisance to Govinda, integrating bodily act and speech.
Vedantic Theme: Nāma as upāsanā: the Lord approached through name and surrender; speech (vāk) sanctified by mantra.
Application: Before japa/pūjā, bathe or symbolically cleanse, perform ācamana, offer flowers, and recite a simple repeated namaskāra mantra to Govinda.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: bhakti
Type: river/pond bathing place and shrine (implied sequence)
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.136.9-10 (preceding worship steps)
This verse places bathing and ācamana as prerequisites for ritual purity, indicating that mantra-recitation and worship (arcana) should be done after physical and ceremonial cleansing.
Rather than describing afterlife punishments, it emphasizes ācāra (proper conduct): the correct sequence—bathe, perform ācamana, worship, then recite salutations with a flower-offering.
Before prayer or japa, follow a simple purification routine (cleanliness, ācamana if practiced), offer a respectful gesture (flowers or joined palms), and recite the salutation with attentiveness.
