कनकक्रोडसहितं सन्निवेद्य परिच्छदम् / पश्चात्तु पारणं कुर्यान्नातितृप्तः सकृद्व्रतः
kanakakroḍasahitaṃ sannivedya paricchadam / paścāttu pāraṇaṃ kuryānnātitṛptaḥ sakṛdvrataḥ
Setelah mempersembahkan hadiah dan kelengkapan yang ditetapkan—bersama sekeping syiling emas—barulah ia melakukan pāraṇa, yakni memutuskan puasa. Orang yang menjalankan nazar sehari janganlah makan berlebihan.
Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinatā-putra)
Concept: Vrata is fulfilled by proper offering (upacāra/dakṣiṇā) and disciplined pāraṇa; restraint (not overeating) preserves tapas’ fruit.
Vedantic Theme: Moderation (mita-āhāra) and sense-control support sattva and steadiness of mind, aiding spiritual progress.
Application: When breaking a fast, first complete the intended offering/donation; then eat simply and moderately, avoiding rebound indulgence.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: vira
Type: ritual space (home/temple)
Related Themes: Garuda Purana Vrata sections: pāraṇa rules and dakṣiṇā as completion markers; Garuda Purana: repeated stress on indriya-jaya and mita-āhāra in observances
This verse treats pāraṇa as a formal, rule-bound completion of a vow—done after offering the requisite gifts—so the vrata is concluded correctly and respectfully.
It emphasizes sequence and restraint: first dāna (including gold as prescribed), then pāraṇa, and even then one should avoid overeating—highlighting self-control as part of dharma.
When ending any fast or religious observance, complete any promised charity first and break the fast moderately rather than indulging—keeping the spirit of discipline intact.
