This verse teaches a hierarchy of priorities: protect wealth for emergencies, use wealth to protect dependents, but ultimately preserve one’s own life and integrity above all—since without the self, duties and resources cannot be sustained.
It frames practical dharma for householders: responsible protection of resources and family, combined with clear discernment that one’s own survival and moral agency are foundational for fulfilling any religious or social obligations.
Maintain savings for emergencies, support and secure your dependents using lawful means, and in extreme situations prioritize personal safety and ethical conduct over property or social pressure.
