Ajāmila Delivered: Viṣṇudūtas Establish the Supremacy of the Holy Name
The Yamadūtas had considered only the external situation of Ajāmila. Since he was extremely sinful throughout his life, they thought he should be taken to Yamarāja and did not know that he had become free from the reactions of all his sins. The Viṣṇudūtas therefore instructed that because he had chanted the four syllables of the name Nārāyaṇa at the time of his death, he was freed from all sinful reactions. In this regard Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura quotes the following verses from the smṛti-śāstra:
This verse says that even an unintentional utterance of Hari’s name can act as the highest auspicious refuge and can nullify sins accumulated over countless births.
Because Ajāmila spoke the holy name of Hari while helpless; the Bhāgavatam presents the holy name as supremely purifying—more effective than ordinary expiations.
Make sincere nāma-japa and kīrtana a daily habit; the verse emphasizes that remembrance and calling upon Hari is a powerful purifier and a safe spiritual shelter.
