Pitṛbhakti and Śrāddha: The Classification of Pitṛs and the Superiority of Pitṛ-kārya
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca | lokānāṃ svastaye tāta śantanupravarātmaja | ityuktaṃ taccaritraṃ me kiṃ bhūyaśśrotumicchasi
Markandeya
Tattva Level: pati
It frames the narration as loka-svastyaya—spiritual welfare for all—implying that hearing Shiva-oriented sacred history purifies the mind and supports liberation in the Shaiva path.
Though not naming the Liṅga here, the verse establishes the Purāṇic method: listening to Shiva’s sacred narratives (caritra) as a form of Saguna-upāsanā that ripens devotion and leads toward realization of Shiva as Pati (the Lord).
The implied practice is śravaṇa (reverent listening) as sādhanā—ideally paired with remembrance of Shiva (japa of “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) to internalize the teaching.
