The Engagement with Citrasena and the Gandharvas

patyāśrayo hi me dharmo mataḥ strīṇāṃ sanātanaḥ | sa devaḥ sā gatir nānyā tasya kā vipriyaṃ caret ||

Educational Q&A

The verse articulates a traditional ideal of strīdharma: a wife regards her husband as her primary support, sacred authority, and ultimate refuge, and therefore avoids conduct that would displease him.

Vaiśaṃpāyana, as narrator, reports a woman’s statement of principle about marital duty and loyalty, framing her ethical stance in terms of dharma and exclusive reliance upon the husband.
