Duryodhana’s Śaraṇāgati and the Pāṇḍavas’ Resolve

Gandharva Encounter

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the instability of worldly and even heavenly power: victory and defeat can reverse suddenly. Ethically, it underscores how unchecked ferocity (ghoratā) in war leads to destruction, reminding listeners that strength without dharma is ultimately perilous.

Mārkaṇḍeya describes a fierce, close-quarters battle between gods and Dānavas. The demons gain the upper hand, and the gods appear to be heading toward defeat as the Dānavas strike them down.
