Kuvalāśva’s Lineage and Uttaṅka’s Petition concerning Dhundhu (धुन्धु-प्रसङ्गः)

Vāmadeva uvāca: nānuyogā brāhmaṇānāṃ bhavanti vācā rājan manasā karmaṇā vā | yas tv evaṃ brahma tapasānveti vidvāṃs tena śreṣṭho bhavati hi jīvamānaḥ ||

Educational Q&A

A king should not attempt to control or punish brāhmaṇas through speech, intention, or force; instead, one should recognize their protected status and pursue brahman through disciplined austerity and respectful service, which leads to true excellence.

Vāmadeva addresses a king and lays down a norm of dharma: royal power has limits regarding brāhmaṇas, and the proper response is reverence, self-restraint, and tapas-oriented conduct rather than coercion.
