Educational Q&A

The verse frames a dharmic inquiry: Brahminhood (dvija status) is not merely a label based on partial Vedic study or social naming, but requires a criterion that can distinguish true spiritual-ethical qualification from mere learning or reputation.

In the Sanatsujāta dialogue within Udyoga Parva, the speaker raises a question about classification among those called one-Veda-knowers, two-Veda-knowers, and those considered fallen—asking which of them should be recognized as a true ‘dvija’ (genuine Brahmin).
