'शत्रुसूदन! तुमने अपने चार भाइयोंको अभयदान दिया है। युद्धमें उन्हें छोड़ देनेकी प्रतिज्ञापर दृढ़ रहना ।। अनामयं स्वस्ति चेति पृथाथो कर्णमत्रवीत् । तां कर्णो5थ तथेत्युक्त्वा ततस्तौ जग्मतु: पृथक्,“तुम्हारा कल्याण हो। तुम्हें किसी प्रकारका कष्ट न हो।” इस प्रकार जब कुन्तीने कर्णसे कहा, तब कर्णने भी “तथास्तु” कहकर उसकी बात मान ली। फिर वे दोनों पृथक्-पृथक् अपने स्थानको चले गये
śatrusūdana! tvayā svacaturbhrātṝṇām abhayadānaṃ dattam. yuddhe tān parityaktum iti pratijñāyāṃ dṛḍho bhava. anāmayaṃ svasti ceti pṛthāto karṇam atravīt. tāṃ karṇo 'tha tathety uktvā tatas tau jagmatuḥ pṛthak.
कर्ण म्हणाला—“हे शत्रुसूदन! तू आपल्या चार भावांना अभय दिले आहेस; म्हणून युद्धात त्यांना सोडून देण्याच्या प्रतिज्ञेवर दृढ राहा.” तेव्हा पृथानंदिनी कुंती कर्णाला म्हणाली—“तुझे कल्याण होवो; तुला कोणताही रोग-दुःख न होवो.” कर्णाने “तथास्तु” असे म्हणून तिचे वचन मान्य केले; आणि मग ते दोघेही आपापल्या स्थानी निघून गेले.
