True spiritual and ethical success comes from a combination of Vedic understanding (śruti), purity gained through the virtuous practices of the good (sadācāra), and steady self-restraint (dama); such a person attains and experiences great results (mahāphala) from righteous action.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on dharma, Bhishma continues advising on the qualities of an ideal person: learned in śruti, purified by noble conduct, and consistently self-controlled, thereby reaping the great fruit of good deeds.
