अग्रय: प्रहरणानां च खड््गो माद्रवतीसुत । महेश्वरप्रणीतश्न पुराणे निश्चयं गत:,(एतानि चैव नामानि पुराणे निश्चितानि वै ।) माद्रीनन्दन! खड्ग सब आयुधोंमें श्रेष्ठ है। भगवान् रुद्रने सबसे पहले इसका संचालन किया था। पुराणमें इसकी श्रेष्ठताका निश्चय किया गया है। उपर्युक्त सारे नाम पुराणोंमें निश्चितरूपसे कहे गये हैं
agrayaḥ praharaṇānāṃ ca khaḍgo mādravatīsuta | maheśvarapraṇītaś ca purāṇe niścayaṃ gataḥ || etāni caiva nāmāni purāṇe niścitāni vai |
भीष्म म्हणाले—माद्रीनंदना! खड्ग सर्व आयुधांमध्ये श्रेष्ठ आहे. महेश्वर (रुद्र) यांनीच सर्वप्रथम त्याचा प्रयोग केला, आणि पुराणांत त्याची श्रेष्ठता निश्चयाने प्रतिपादिली आहे. ही नावेही पुराणांत निश्चित सांगितली आहेत.
