Bhīma’s Rebuttal of Yudhiṣṭhira’s Renunciatory Inclination
vayamevātra garhā hi yad vayaṃ mandacetasam | tvāṃ rājann anugacchāmo jyeṣṭho ’yam iti bhārata ||
Mere seniority or formal status is not sufficient ground for obedience; followers share moral responsibility when they support an unwise leader. Ethical agency requires discernment, not blind deference.
Bhima speaks in a tone of sharp self-reproach, saying that he and others are at fault for continuing to follow the king simply because he is regarded as the elder brother, despite his poor judgment.
