Even amid the devastation of war, one should uphold humane conduct—greeting others with warmth and inquiring after their welfare—while also framing death within the Mahābhārata’s moral horizon of svarga (heaven) for those who have departed.
Sañjaya, as narrator and messenger, instructs that the departed rulers—described as having already reached svargaloka—should be remembered and addressed with affectionate respect, emphasizing consolation and continuity of regard beyond death.
