The verse highlights how quickly collective courage collapses when a central pillar of leadership falls. In the ethical frame of the epic, it contrasts the ideal of steadfast kṣatriya resolve with the human reality of fear, showing that attachment to a single champion can weaken an army’s inner discipline.
Sañjaya reports that after Karṇa is seen felled, the Kaurava warriors become alarmed and distressed; many are bleeding and trembling, and they flee toward their camp in disorder.
