Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how anger and pride—rooted in status (lineage, power, learning, strength)—distort perception and speech. It implicitly warns that counsel given under the sway of krodha and darpa tends to be ethically compromised and strategically harmful.

Sañjaya describes Śalya’s emotional state: enraged and self-important, he prepares to speak. The line also functions as a transition marker, closing the chapter that centers on the dialogue between Karṇa and Duryodhana and moving the narrative toward Śalya’s forthcoming words.
