Austerity, regulated fasting, residual-eating, and hospitality
तस्माम्समित्रं श्राद्धकृन्नाद्रियेत दद्याम्मित्रेभ्य: संग्रहार्थ धनानि । यन्मन्यते नैव शत्रुं न मित्र त॑ मध्यस्थं भोजयेद्धव्यकव्ये
tasmāt samitraṁ śrāddhakṛn nādriyeta dadyān mitrebhyaḥ saṅgrahārthaṁ dhanāni | yan manyate naiva śatruṁ na mitraṁ taṁ madhyasthaṁ bhojayeddhavyakavye ||
भीष्म म्हणाले—म्हणून श्राद्ध करणाऱ्याने श्राद्धात मित्राला विशेष मान देऊन बोलावू नये. मित्रांना प्रसन्न ठेवायचे असल्यास संग्रहार्थ धन देणे योग्य आहे. पण हव्य-कव्य कर्मात भोजन त्यालाच द्यावे जो न शत्रू न मित्र—मध्यस्थ व निष्पक्ष मानला जातो.
