Āloka-dāna (Dīpa-dāna), Sumanas–Dhūpa–Dīpa Phala: Manu–Suvarṇa and Śukra–Bali Exempla
dvividho hi smṛto gandha iṣṭo 'niṣṭaś ca puṣpajaḥ | iṣṭagandhāni devānāṁ puṣpāṇīti vibhāvaya ||
Discernment and purity in offerings: just as fragrances are of pleasing and displeasing kinds, one should choose what is agreeable and pure—symbolized by sweet-smelling flowers—as fit for divine worship and ethically refined conduct.
Śukra is instructing his listener by using a simple example from ritual life: among flowers, those with pleasing fragrance are preferred by the gods, so one should keep this principle in mind when selecting offerings and cultivating what is spiritually acceptable.
