Chapter 74: Non-anger, Forbearance, and the Ethics of Residence
सुनिकृष्टा च ते योनि: पुंश्वलीव प्रभाषसे । यदृच्छया कामरागाज्जाता मेनकया हासि,तुम्हारी जाति नीच है। तुम कुलटा-जैसी बातें करती हो। जान पड़ता है, मेनकाने अकस्मात् भोगासक्तिके वशीभूत होकर तुम्हें जन्म दिया है
sunikṛṣṭā ca te yoniḥ puṁśvalīva prabhāṣase | yadṛcchayā kāmarāgāj jātā menakayā asi ||
तुझी उत्पत्ती नीच आहे; तू कुलटेसारखी वाणी बोलतेस. असे वाटते की मेनकेने अकस्मात् कामरागाच्या वश होऊन तुला जन्म दिला आहे.
दुष्यन्त उवाच
The verse highlights an ethical fault: harsh, defamatory speech that attacks a person’s birth and character. In dharma discourse, such speech is a form of adharma—injuring another through words, driven by anger, fear, or self-interest rather than truth and restraint.
Duṣyanta speaks in a scornful, accusatory tone, denigrating the woman’s origin and suggesting she is Menakā’s child born from uncontrolled passion. The line functions as a verbal assault meant to discredit her claim and undermine her social standing.
