Mantra 1
Mantra 2
Mantra 3
Mantra 4
Mantra 5
Mantra 6
Mantra 7
Mantra 8
Mantra 9
Mantra 10
The hymn opens by naming ‘that Vrātya’ and immediately presenting a bandhu: his first Vyāna is identified with ‘this Earth’ (15.17.1).
Not a petitionary prayer but an ontological installation: to have space (Earth) and time (ārtava periodicity) recognized as the Vrātya’s pervading breath-field, thereby integrating the human order into cosmic order.
Efficacy is asserted through the cumulative identifications: once the world is recognized as Vyāna-diffusion, sovereignty and stability are intrinsic, not externally granted.
The sequence culminates in a unitive statement: ‘one thing of theirs is immortality’—said to be ‘aid indeed’ (15.17.10), sealing the hymn as protective and salvific knowledge.
yo'sya prathamo vyānaḥ seyaṃ bhūmiḥ
ekaṃ tadeṣām amṛtatvam… ūtir eva
Rajakarmani / Vratya (cosmological bandhu; social-theological integration)
To stabilize and authorize a sacral-social order by aligning the community’s world (earth/space and seasonal time) with the Vrātya’s pervading breath, thereby securing protection and a share in ‘immortality’ as enduring well-being.
Ritual specialists and leaders (rājan/elite patrons) working with Atharvanic theology; communities seeking integration/legitimation through Vrātya symbolism and prāṇa-cosmology.
Vrātya appears as a cosmic person/principle whose ‘Vyāna’—the all-pervading breath—diffuses through and constitutes the world; Earth and other ordered structures are treated as his manifested members/powers.
To proclaim and ritually ‘install’ the Vrātya’s cosmic sovereignty by identifying his first Vyāna with Earth and his further Vyāna-correlations with ordered periodicity, culminating in the claim that his unity yields amṛtatva as effective protection.
Suitable for consecratory contexts (rājakarma/installation), boundary or settlement sacralization, or seasonal transitions when reaffirming ārtava order; can be recited whenever social cohesion and legitimating ‘cosmic mapping’ are sought.
Here the Vrātya is presented less as a social outsider and more as a cosmic person/principle whose pervading breath (Vyāna) constitutes and orders the world.
It uses bandhu (correspondence) logic: Earth is the most immediate, all-supporting ‘field’ of pervasion, so it is identified with the Vrātya’s first Vyāna to sacralize space and ground sovereignty.
It frames deathlessness as a practical protective power: knowing/reciting the Vrātya’s unity and pervasion is treated as a stabilizing, safeguarding force for the community and its order.
