Sage Parāśara (narrating) to Maitreya
Speaker: Parasara
Teaching: Ethical
Quality: revealing
Concept: True dharma functions as an inner armor; when it is abandoned, external power cannot prevent destruction.
Vedantic Theme: Dharma
Application: Prioritize character and disciplined conduct as your primary ‘protection’ before relying on status, alliances, or force.
Vishishtadvaita: Dharma is a real, sustaining attribute of the Lord’s order; protection is ultimately grounded in alignment with that divine order.
Vishnu Form: Para-Brahman
Bhakti Type: Shanta
This verse frames true dharma as an active protective force: when righteousness is foremost, it functions like armor that prevents collapse; when it is lost, ruin follows.
Parāśara links collective safety (rakṣā) to the primacy of saddharma; protection arises first through righteousness, but the moment that moral safeguard disappears, destruction becomes inevitable.
Even when Vishnu is not named directly, the Purana’s theology treats dharma as rooted in the Supreme Order upheld by Vishnu; sustaining dharma aligns beings with that sovereign cosmic reality, while losing it leads to dissolution.
