ईश्वरश्च कथं जातो नन्दिकेशो हि नामतः । वृत्तं तदपि सुप्रीत्या कथय त्वं महामते

Sthala Purana: The verse asks about Nandikeśa’s birth/origin. While not a Jyotirliṅga per se, Nandī is paradigmatic of kṣetra-pāla and gaṇa leadership in Śiva temples, often linked to the sanctity and guardianship of Śiva-sthalas.
Significance: Nandikeśa is the archetypal devotee-gatekeeper; knowing his origin is treated as devotionally meritorious and as instruction in sevā-bhakti (service) leading toward Śiva’s grace.
This verse shows the disciple-like attitude of inquiry—seeking the sacred origin (janma-vṛtta) of Nandikeśa, Śiva’s foremost gaṇa. In Shaiva devotion, asking with humility and “suprīti” (reverent goodwill) is itself a doorway to grace and right understanding of Śiva’s divine order.
Nandikeśa is intimately connected with Saguna Śiva worship as the chief attendant and emblem of steadfast devotion; in many Śaiva traditions he stands before the Liṅga/Śiva as the ideal bhakta.
