Unspecified (context-dependent within Svargakhaṇḍa 55)

Concept: Aśauca (impurity) restricts certain acts; one must restore fitness before engaging in śruti-recitation, bathing rites, eating, or resting—especially under sacred witnesses.

Application: When unclean (after certain bodily functions, contact, or before prescribed cleansing), pause routine acts; perform proper ācamana/śauca first; be mindful of posture and direction during daily rituals.

Primary Rasa: bhayanaka

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A devotee stands at the threshold of a simple āśrama, pausing mid-action as if remembering a rule of purity. Above, the Sun and Moon appear as serene witness-discs in a symbolic sky, while a small sacred fire and a fluttering wind-banner suggest Agni and Vāyu observing; the devotee turns toward a water pot, preparing to cleanse before any recitation or meal.","primary_figures":["a contemplative devotee","symbolic Sun (Sūrya)","symbolic Moon (Candra)","Agni (as altar flame)","Vāyu (as wind indicated by banner/cloth)","a brāhmaṇa figure (distant, seated)","a kingly figure (distant, symbolic)"],"setting":"āśrama courtyard with water pot, kusa grass, small fire-altar, and a shaded veranda","lighting_mood":"divine radiance","color_palette":["sun-gold","moon-pearl","ash white","sacred flame orange","sky cobalt"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: symbolic cosmic witnesses—Sun and Moon with gold leaf discs—over an āśrama scene where a devotee pauses to perform ācamana before svādhyāya; a small agni-kunda with gold-highlighted flames, wind suggested by flowing cloth; distant seated brāhmaṇa and a regal figure as icons of authority; rich reds/greens, ornate borders, gold leaf accents throughout.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: lyrical courtyard with delicate trees and a water pot; the devotee’s thoughtful pause is central; Sun and Moon rendered as soft medallions; subtle smoke from fire, a fluttering banner for wind; cool palette with refined facial expressions and gentle narrative symbolism.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlines, stylized Sun and Moon as large-eyed celestial faces; agni as rhythmic flame motif; devotee near a kalasha; strong red/yellow/green palette, temple-wall composition with icon-like figures for brāhmaṇa and king.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: central devotee framed by lotus borders; Sun and Moon as ornate circular emblems; deep blue background with gold highlights; small altar fire and flowing banner; intricate floral patterns suggesting cosmic order and ritual timing."}

FAQs

The verse lists five actions to avoid while impure: lying down (śayana), drinking (pāna), sacred recitation or self-study (svādhyāya), bathing (snāna), and eating (bhojana).

These are treated as revered presences or directions associated with sanctity and social-religious order; the verse advises heightened restraint and decorum in states of impurity when near such presences.

It emphasizes self-discipline and reverence—aligning personal conduct with context, purity norms, and respect for sacred forces and honored persons.
