The speaker is Sumati. The verse introduces a well-known sage, Bhṛgu, and sets the scene for an ensuing episode by noting that he once went out in the evening to collect firewood.
The phrase highlights Bhṛgu’s prestige within the Brahmā-centered genealogical and rishi tradition common to Purāṇic narration, establishing his authority and the sacred weight of the story that follows.
Collecting samid points to disciplined daily duties associated with Vedic life—service, austerity, and ritual responsibility—often used in Purāṇas to foreground humility and adherence to dharma before major events unfold.
