Concept: Present circumstances are shaped by prior-life actions; names and identities shift, but karmic impressions persist.

Application: Treat current challenges as invitations to ethical repair and devotional discipline rather than blame; cultivate compassion to avoid future karmic knots.

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A dreamlike split-scene shows two lifetimes: on one side, ‘Varatanu’ and the fair-limbed ‘Śaṅkarī’ in simple traveler’s garb; on the other, the present royal couple, their faces faintly mirroring the past. A translucent veil of time—like a flowing silk ribbon—connects the two scenes, suggesting karmic continuity.","primary_figures":["Varatanu (former birth of Candra)","Śaṅkarī (former birth of the wife)","present King and Queen","narrating sage/voice as a subtle silhouette"],"setting":"liminal, painterly space blending road-side landscape with palace interior","lighting_mood":"moonlit","color_palette":["silver gray","lotus pink","midnight blue","pale gold","smoky violet"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: dual-panel composition with gold leaf borders—left panel shows Varatanu and Śaṅkarī as travelers under a stylized moon; right panel shows the royal couple; ornate halos and gold filigree ‘time veil’ connecting panels; rich reds, greens, and embossed gold detailing.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: lyrical, misty night with cool blues; delicate faces and fine textiles; a winding path and a palace balcony subtly merged; a thin, flowing scarf motif linking past and present, emphasizing poetic rebirth memory.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlines and flat color fields; two registers (past above, present below) with stylized moon and lotus medallions; expressive eyes and symmetrical composition conveying destiny.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: central lotus mandala representing samsāra; around it, small vignettes of the couple in two births; ornate floral borders, peacocks, deep indigo ground with gold highlights, devotional aesthetic even in narrative content."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"meditative","suggested_raga":"Bhairavi","pace":"slow-meditative","voice_tone":"serene","sound_elements":["soft tanpura","distant conch","night insects","gentle wind"]}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: चंद्रस्त्वं = चन्द्रः + त्वम् (ः + त् → स्त्); तवापि = तव + अपि; शुभ्रांगी = शुभ्र + अङ्गी (अ + अ → आ).

FAQs

It identifies Candra’s previous-birth name (Varatanu) and the name of his wife (Śaṅkarī), framing a rebirth-based backstory within the Brahma-khaṇḍa narrative.

Not necessarily. Śaṅkarī can be an epithet of Pārvatī, but in this verse it functions as a personal name for Candra’s wife in a prior birth; confirming any divine identification requires surrounding context.

The verse reflects the Purāṇic worldview of saṃsāra (continued birth) and continuity of identity through karmic history, where present conditions are linked to prior-life narratives.
