The Episode of Śivaśarmā: Testing Somaśarmā through Service and Truth

yadi me satyamastīti guruśuśrūṣaṇaṃ yadi | tapastaptaṃ mayāpūrvaṃ nirvyalīkena cetasā

FAQs

It invokes satya (truthfulness), guru-sevā (service to one’s teacher), and tapas (austerity) as moral-spiritual credentials, emphasizing sincerity (a mind free from deceit) as essential.

While not explicitly naming a deity, it highlights guruśuśrūṣaṇa—humble service to the spiritual teacher—which is a core devotional discipline in many Bhakti traditions.

This is a common Sanskrit rhetorical form for a vow or truth-act (satya-saṅkalpa): the speaker conditionally appeals to their virtues to empower a forthcoming request, blessing, or assertion (likely continued in the next verse).
