Adhyaya 38 — Dattatreya on Non-Identification (Mamata) and the Path to Liberation
दत्तात्रेय उवाच ।
एवमेतन्नरव्याघ्र यथैतद्व्याहृतं त्वया ।
ममेति मूलं दुःखस्य न ममेति च निर्वृतेः ॥
dattātreya uvāca |
evametannaravyāghra yathaitadvyāhṛtaṃ tvayā |
mameti mūlaṃ duḥkhasya na mameti ca nirvṛteḥ ||
ദത്താത്രേയൻ പറഞ്ഞു—ഹേ നരവ്യാഘ്രാ, നീ പറഞ്ഞതുപോലെ തന്നെയാണ്. ‘എന്റെത്’ ദുഃഖത്തിന്റെ മൂലം; ‘എന്റെത് അല്ല’ ശാന്തിയുടെയും മോക്ഷത്തിന്റെയും കാരണം.

The ethical pivot is relinquishing possessiveness: one may act responsibly in the world, yet inwardly drop the claim of ownership that breeds fear and grief.
This is dharma/jñāna upadeśa within narrative; it supports the Purāṇa’s instructional function rather than its genealogical or cosmic catalogues.
‘Na mama’ is a practical mantra of dis-identification: it severs the subtle knot tying consciousness to objects, echoing renunciatory and yogic interiorization.
