Aśvatthāman’s Admonition to Karṇa on Boasting, Varṇa-Duties, and the Threat of Arjuna

Virāṭa-parva, Adhyāya 45

idam tu cintayann evaṁ parimuhyāmi kevalam | niścayaṁ cāpi durmedhā na gacchāmi kathaṁcana ||

Educational Q&A

Even when external support seems strong, inner fear and overthinking can produce moha (bewilderment) that blocks niścaya (clear resolve). The verse highlights the ethical-psychological need for steadiness of mind to act rightly in crisis.

Uttara, facing the prospect of battle, confesses that one persistent worry makes him mentally confused; he cannot reach a decision. This reflects his wavering courage despite the presence of powerful allies.
