Draupadī Awakens Bhīmasena

vaiśampāyana uvāca | sairandhri tvaṁ avasaraṁ na vijānāsi; tasmān naṭīkā iva rāja-sabhāyāṁ roravīṣi dyūta-krīḍāyāṁ ca pravṛttānāṁ matsya-rāja-kumārāṇāṁ krīḍāyāṁ vighnaṁ karosi || gaccha sairandhri gandharvāḥ kariṣyanti tava priyam | vyapaneṣyanti te duḥkhaṁ yena te vipriyaṁ kṛtam ||

Vaiśampāyana said: “Sairandhrī, you do not recognize the right moment; that is why you weep in the royal hall like an actress and disrupt the sport of the Matsya prince(s) absorbed in their gaming. Go, Sairandhrī—Gandharvas will do what is dear to you. They will remove your sorrow by slaying the one who has wronged you.”

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the importance of timing and appropriate conduct in a royal setting, while also affirming a moral expectation that wrongdoing against the vulnerable should be answered with protection and justice—here framed as the promise that powerful allies will remove the victim’s grief by punishing the offender.

Sairandhrī (Draupadī, incognito) is crying in the royal court and interrupting the princes’ gaming. The speaker rebukes her for not choosing the right moment and tells her to go, assuring her that ‘Gandharvas’ will act on her behalf and eliminate the person who has harmed her, thereby ending her sorrow.
