Adhyāya 14: Sudēṣṇā Sends Sairandhrī to Kīcaka’s House (सुदेष्णा–सैरन्ध्री–कीचक संवादः)

(स्वेषु दारेषु मेधावी कुरुते यत्नमुत्तमम्‌ | स्वदारनिरतो हाशु नरो भद्राणि पश्यति ।।

vaiśampāyana uvāca |

svēṣu dārēṣu mēdhāvī kurutē yatnam uttamam |

svadāranirataḥ śīghraṁ naro bhadrāṇi paśyati ||

na cādharmeṇa lipyeta na cākīrtim avāpnuyāt |

svadārēṣu ratiḥ dharmo mṛtasya api na saṁśayaḥ ||

svajātidārā martyasya ihaloke paratra ca |

pretakāryāṇi kurvanti nivāpais tarpayanti ca ||

tad akṣayyaṁ ca dharmyaṁ ca svargyam āhur manīṣiṇaḥ |

svajātidārajāḥ putrā jāyante kulapūjitāḥ ||

priyā hi prāṇināṁ dārās tasmāt tvaṁ dharmabhāg bhava |

paradārarato martyo na ca bhadrāṇi paśyati ||

paradārāsmi bhadraṁ te na yuktaṁ tava sāmpratam |

dayitāḥ prāṇināṁ dārā dharmaṁ samanucintaya ||

വൈശമ്പായനൻ പറഞ്ഞു—“ബുദ്ധിമാൻ തന്റെ ഭാര്യയോടുള്ള സൗഹൃദവും ഐക്യവും നിലനിർത്താൻ ശ്രേഷ്ഠമായ പരിശ്രമം നടത്തുന്നു; സ്വന്തം ഭാര്യയോടു നിഷ്ഠയുള്ളവൻ शीഘ്രം മംഗളവും ക്ഷേമവും കാണുന്നു. അധർമ്മത്തിൽ മലിനമാകരുത്; അപകീർത്തിയും നേടരുത്. സ്വന്തം ഭാര്യയോടുള്ള സ്നേഹവും വിശ്വസ്തതയും പരമധർമ്മമെന്നു പ്രസ്താവിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു—മൃതനു പോലും അത് ഹിതകരമാണ്, സംശയമില്ല. സ്വന്തം സമുദായത്തിലെ ഭാര്യ ഇഹലോകത്തും പരലോകത്തും ഉപകാരിണിയാണ്; അവൾ പ്രേതകർമ്മങ്ങൾ നിർവഹിക്കുകയും, നിവാപ-ജലാഞ്ജലികളാൽ മരിച്ചവനെ തൃപ്തിപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. പണ്ഡിതർ ഇതിനെ അക്ഷയം, ധർമ്മ്യം, സ്വർഗ്ഗപ്രദം എന്നു പറയുന്നു; സ്വന്തം സമുദായത്തിലെ ഭാര്യയിൽ ജനിച്ച പുത്രന്മാർ കുലത്തിൽ ആദരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. എല്ലാ ജീവികൾക്കും സ്വന്തം ഭാര്യ തന്നെയാണ് പ്രിയ; അതുകൊണ്ട് നീയും ധർമ്മഭാഗിയായിരിക്കുക. പരസ്ത്രീലോലൻ ഒരിക്കലും യഥാർത്ഥ മംഗളം കാണുകയില്ല. ‘കൂടാതെ, ഞാൻ മറ്റൊരാളുടെ ഭാര്യയാണ്—നിനക്ക് മംഗളം വരട്ടെ. ഈ സമയത്ത് എന്നോടു ഇങ്ങനെ സംസാരിക്കുന്നത് നിനക്കു യോജിച്ചതല്ല. എല്ലാവർക്കും സ്വന്തം ഭാര്യ പ്രിയമാണ്; ധർമ്മം ചിന്തിക്ക.’”
