kunty uvāca paramaṁ bhagavan tan naivaṁ saṅgamiṣye tvayā saha | yadi putro bhaved evaṁ yathā vadasi gopate ||
The verse foregrounds conditional consent and ethical caution: Kuntī does not yield impulsively, but sets a clear condition—only if the promised outcome (a worthy son) is assured will she agree. It reflects the Mahābhārata’s concern with dharma as careful, consequence-aware choice.
In Kuntī’s exchange with Sūrya, she responds to his assurances by stating that she will agree to union only if she receives a son exactly as he promises—thus negotiating the terms and consequences of the divine encounter.
