Aṣṭāvakra’s Entry and the Opening of the Brahmodya

Educational Q&A

True learning is grounded in discipline and devoted service to the teacher; when the guru recognizes sincere paricaryā (attendance and humility), knowledge is bestowed as a gift of trust, and social bonds (like marriage) may follow as a mark of acceptance into the teacher’s lineage.

Kahoda serves the sage Uddālaka like an exemplary student. Pleased with his conduct, Uddālaka quickly teaches him the Vedic learning and gives his daughter Sujātā to him in marriage, formalizing Kahoda’s place as a worthy disciple and son-in-law.
