अध्याय ८ — शल्यस्य सत्कारः, वरदानं, पाण्डवसमागमश्च (Śalya’s Reception, the Boon, and Meeting the Pāṇḍavas)

यथा स हृतदर्पश्न हृततेजाश्न पाण्डव । भविष्यति सुखं हन्तुं सत्यमेतद्‌ ब्रवीमि ते,कुरुश्रेष्ठ! जब कर्ण रणभूमिमें अर्जुनके साथ युद्धकी इच्छा करेगा, उस समय मैं अवश्य ही उसके प्रतिकूल अहितकर वचन बोलूँगा, जिससे उसका अभिमान और तेज नष्ट हो जायगा और वह युद्धमें सुखपूर्वक मारा जा सकेगा। पाण्डुनन्दन! मैं तुमसे यह सत्य कहता हूँ

yathā sa hṛta-darpaś ca hṛta-tejāś ca pāṇḍava | bhaviṣyati sukhaṁ hantuṁ satyam etad bravīmi te ||

ഹേ പാണ്ഡവാ! ഞാൻ നിന്നോട് സത്യം പറയുന്നു— അവന്റെ ദർപ്പവും തേജസ്സും ഒടിഞ്ഞുപോകുന്ന വിധം ഞാൻ അവനോട് സംസാരിക്കും; അപ്പോൾ യുദ്ധത്തിൽ അവനെ എളുപ്പത്തിൽ വധിക്കാം.
