उद्योगपर्व — अध्याय 33: धृतराष्ट्र-विदुर संवादः (विदुरनीतिः)

दृश्यन्ते हि महात्मानो बध्यमाना: स्वकर्मभि: । इन्द्रियाणामनीशत्वाद्‌ राजानो राज्यवि श्रमै:,इन्द्रियोंपर अधिकार न होनेके कारण बड़े-बड़े साधु भी अपने कर्मोंसे तथा राजालोग राज्यके भोग-विलासोंसे बँधे रहते हैं

dṛśyante hi mahātmāno badhyamānāḥ svakarmabhiḥ | indriyāṇām anīśatvād rājāno rājyaviśramaiḥ ||

മഹാത്മാക്കളും തങ്ങളുടെ കര്‍മ്മഫലബന്ധനത്തിൽ കുടുങ്ങുന്നതു നാം കാണുന്നു; അതുപോലെ രാജാക്കന്മാർ, ഇന്ദ്രിയനിയന്ത്രണമില്ലാത്തതിനാൽ, രാജ്യഭോഗവിലാസങ്ങളിൽ പെട്ടുപോകുന്നു.

Without mastery over the senses, even the noble become trapped—by their own actions and their consequences; and rulers in particular are ensnared by the comforts and temptations that come with power. The ethical thrust is indriya-nigraha (sense-control) as a prerequisite for dharmic action and freedom from bondage.
