Adhyaya 32: Saṃjaya’s Return, Audience with Dhṛtarāṣṭra, and Ethical Admonition

धृतराष्ट उवाच संजयो विदुर प्राज्ञो गहयित्वा च मां गतः । अजाततशत्रो: श्वो वाक्‍्यं सभामध्ये स वक्ष्यति,धृतराष्ट्रने कहा--विदुर! बुद्धिमान्‌ संजय आया था, वह मुझे बुरा-भला कहकर चला गया है। कल सभामें वह अजातशत्रु युधिष्ठिरके वचन सुनायेगा

dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca | sañjayo vidura prājño garhayitvā ca māṃ gataḥ | ajātaśatroḥ śvo vākyaṃ sabhāmadhye sa vakṣyati ||

ധൃതരാഷ്ട്രൻ പറഞ്ഞു— “വിദുരാ! പ്രാജ്ഞനായ സഞ്ജയൻ ഇവിടെ വന്ന് എന്നെ ശാസിച്ച് പോയി. നാളെ സഭാമദ്ധ്യേ അവൻ അജാതശത്രു (യുധിഷ്ഠിരൻ) പറഞ്ഞ സന്ദേശം—അവന്റെ വാക്കുകൾ—അറിയിക്കും.”

Educational Q&A

A ruler must accept truthful counsel even when it is painful. Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s remark that Sañjaya ‘censured’ him highlights the ethical tension between flattery and honest admonition; dharma in governance requires listening to corrective speech, not resisting it out of attachment.

Sañjaya has returned from the Pāṇḍavas and has delivered Yudhiṣṭhira’s message. Dhṛtarāṣṭra tells Vidura that Sañjaya reproached him and has left, and that the next day Sañjaya will formally speak Yudhiṣṭhira’s words in the royal assembly.
