Educational Q&A

The verse condemns wealth or worldly gain when it becomes the motive for adharma—especially the catastrophic sin of destroying one’s own kin. It frames such gain as morally tainted, because it inevitably brings grief, defeat, and the collapse of relationships.

Vaiśampāyana, narrating the events leading to the Kurukṣetra war, voices a lament: the conflict has escalated to the point where a massive slaughter of relatives is being pursued for the sake of ‘artha’ (material advantage/kingdom), and the war will necessarily entail the downfall of one’s own loved ones and allies.
