अपनी इन्द्रियोंको संयममें रखनेवाले धर्मात्मा राजा युधिष्ठिर यदि यह जान लेंगे कि मैं (कर्ण) कुन्तीका प्रथम पुत्र हूँ, तब वे राज्य ग्रहण नहीं करेंगे ।। प्राप्प चापि महद्‌ राज्यं तदहं मधुसूदन । स्फीतं दुर्योधनायैव सम्प्रदद्यामरिंदम,शत्रुदमन मधुसूदन! उस दशामें मैं उस समृद्धिशाली विशाल राज्यको पाकर भी दुर्योधनको ही सौंप दूँगा

dharmātmā rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ saṃyatendriyaḥ yadi jānīyāt yathāhaṃ (karṇaḥ) kuntīyāḥ prathamaḥ putraḥ, tadā sa rājyaṃ na gṛhṇīyāt. prāpya cāpi mahad rājyaṃ tad ahaṃ madhusūdana, sphītaṃ duryodhanāyaiva sampradadyām arindama.

ധർമ്മാത്മാവും ഇന്ദ്രിയസംയമനമുള്ളവനുമായ രാജാവ് യുധിഷ്ഠിരൻ ഞാൻ കുന്തിയുടെ ജ്യേഷ്ഠപുത്രനാണെന്ന് അറിഞ്ഞാൽ, അവൻ രാജ്യം സ്വീകരിക്കുകയില്ല. പിന്നെ, ഹേ മധുസൂദനാ, ഹേ ശത്രുദമനാ! ആ മഹത്തും സമൃദ്ധവുമായ രാജ്യം എനിക്കു ലഭിച്ചാലും, ഞാൻ അത് ദുര്യോധനനേയ്ക്കു മാത്രമേ ഏല്പിക്കൂ.
