Educational Q&A

The verse underscores vigilant preparedness and deliberate counsel in the face of danger, while implicitly raising an ethical question: the pursuit of victory often involves ‘upāyas’ (strategic means), which must be weighed with discernment so that power and success do not drift away from dharma.

Śalya describes Indra (Śakra) as remaining alert and energized, actively thinking through the practical methods by which Vṛtra might be slain—portraying a moment of strategic deliberation before decisive action.
