The verse presents an ethical ideal of a kṣatriya: strength joined with inner restraint (śama), generosity (dāna), and the duty to protect those who seek refuge (śaraṇāgati), while honoring Brahmins and learning (brāhmaṇya). Valor is praised, but it is framed as disciplined and service-oriented rather than merely aggressive.
In Śānti Parva, Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) describes Arjuna’s character to the Bharata listener, highlighting his virtues—splendor, strength, calm self-control, reverence for Brahmins, readiness to shelter the distressed, generosity, and heroism—within a broader discourse on dharma and right conduct.
