Atithi-prāpti and the Brāhmaṇa’s Deliberation on Triadic Dharma (अतिथिप्राप्तिः धर्मत्रयविचारश्च)

य॑ं हित्वा देवता: सर्वा हव्यकव्यभुजो5भवन्‌ | किंतु यह सनातन मोक्षधर्म अत्यन्त दुष्कर जान पड़ता है, जिसे छोड़कर सब देवता हव्य और कट्योंके भोक्ता बन गये हैं,त्वय्यावेशितभारोहं धृतिं प्राप्स्याम्यथाउजसा । यदा च सुरकार्य ते अविषदह्ां भविष्यति तुमपर यह भार रखकर मैं अनायास ही धैर्य धारण करूँगा। जब कभी तुम्हारे लिये देवताओंका कार्य असहा हो जायगा, तब मैं आत्मज्ञानका उपदेश देनेके लिये तुम्हारे सामने प्रकट हो जाऊँगा। ऐसा कहकर भगवान्‌ हयग्रीव वहीं अन्तर्धान हो गये

yaṁ hitvā devatāḥ sarvā havyakavyabhujo 'bhavan | kintu yaḥ sanātano mokṣadharmo 'tyanta-duṣkaraḥ jñāyate | tvayy āveśita-bhāro 'haṁ dhṛtiṁ prāpsyāmy athaujasaḥ | yadā ca sura-kāryaṁ te aviṣahaṁ bhaviṣyati | tadāham ātma-jñānopadeśāya tava purataḥ prādurbhaviṣyāmi | iti uktvā bhagavān hayagrīvaḥ tatraivāntardadhāna ||

“ആ (ഉന്നത പഥം) ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് എല്ലാ ദേവന്മാരും ഹവ്യ-കവ്യങ്ങളുടെ ഭോക്താക്കളായി; ആ സനാതന മോക്ഷധർമ്മം അത്യന്തം ദുഷ്കരം. ഈ ഭാരമൊക്കെ നിനക്കു ഏല്പിച്ച്, നിന്റെ തേജസ്സാൽ തന്നെ ഞാൻ സ്വാഭാവികമായി ധൈര്യം പ്രാപിക്കും. നിനക്കായി ദേവകാര്യങ്ങൾ അസഹ്യമായാൽ, ആത്മജ്ഞാനം ഉപദേശിക്കുവാൻ ഞാൻ നിന്റെ മുന്നിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷനാകും.” ഇങ്ങനെ പറഞ്ഞ് ഭഗവാൻ ഹയഗ്രീവൻ അവിടെയേ അന്തർധാനം ചെയ്തു.

The passage contrasts ritual religiosity (havya-kavya offerings) with the far more demanding ‘mokṣa-dharma’—the path of liberation grounded in Self-knowledge. It implies that liberation requires exceptional resolve and guidance, and that true spiritual instruction (ātma-jñāna-upadeśa) is the decisive aid when ordinary duties become overwhelming.

Janamejaya speaks of the gods turning toward sacrificial consumption after abandoning the difficult path of liberation. After making this assurance, Lord Hayagrīva vanishes on the spot.
