Mahābhārata 12.292
स चाप्यग्न्याहितो विप्र: क्रिया यस्य न हीयते । श्रेयो हानाहिताग्नित्वमग्निहोत्रं न निष्क्रियम्
sa cāpy agnyāhito vipraḥ kriyā yasya na hīyate | śreyo hānāhitāgnitvam agnihotraṃ na niṣkriyam ||
അഗ്നികളെ സ്ഥാപിച്ച ആ ബ്രാഹ്മണനും, ആരുടെ വിധിക്രിയകൾ ഒരിക്കലും ക്ഷയിക്കാത്തവയോ—ശാസ്ത്രാനുഷ്ഠാനശക്തിയും ശീലശുദ്ധിയും ഇല്ലാത്ത ‘നിഷ്ക്രിയ’ അഗ്നിഹോത്രം ചെയ്യുന്നതിനെക്കാൾ അഗ്നി പാലിക്കാതിരിക്കുക തന്നെയാണ് ശ്രേയസ്കരം.
