Mahābhārata 12.292

वाचा शेषावहार्येण पालनेनात्मनो5पि च । यथावद्‌ भृत्यवर्गस्य चिकीर्षेत्‌ कर्म आदित:,इसी प्रकार वेद-वाणीके पठन, श्रवण एवं मननसे, यज्ञशेष अन्नके भोजनसे तथा जीवोंकी रक्षा करनेसे मनुष्य अपने ऋणसे मुक्त होता है। भरणीय कुटुम्बीजनके पालन- पोषणका आरम्भसे ही प्रबन्ध करना चाहिये। इससे उनके ऋणसे भी मुक्ति हो जाती है

vācā śeṣāvahāryeṇa pālanenātmano 'pi ca |

yathāvad bhṛtyavargasya cikīrṣet karma āditaḥ ||

ഇങ്ങനെ വേദവാണിയുടെ പാഠം, ശ്രവണം, മനനം എന്നിവകൊണ്ടും, യജ്ഞശേഷമായ അന്നമേ ഭുജിച്ചുകൊണ്ടും, ജീവികളെ സംരക്ഷിച്ചുകൊണ്ടും മനുഷ്യൻ തന്റെ കടങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് മോചിതനാകുന്നു. കൂടാതെ ആശ്രിതരുടെ പോഷണ-പരിപാലനത്തിന് തുടക്കത്തിൽ തന്നേ യഥാവിധി ക്രമീകരണം ചെയ്യണം—അങ്ങനെ അവരുടെ പ്രതിയുള്ള കടവും തീരും.
