उशनसः (शुक्रस्य) चरितम् — The Account of Uśanā (Śukra): Yoga, Grievance, and Pacification

नेशेडयं सततं देही नृपते पुण्यपापयो: । तत एव समुत्थेन तमसा रुध्यतेडपि च,नरेश्वर! यह जीवात्मा पुण्य और पापके फल सुख और दु:ख भोगनेमें स्वतन्त्र नहीं है, उन पुण्य और पापोंसे उत्पन्न संस्काररूप अन्धकारसे यह आच्छन्न हो जाता है

bhīṣma uvāca | neśeḍayaṃ satataṃ dehī nṛpate puṇyapāpayoḥ | tata eva samutthena tamasā rudhyate 'pi ca, nareśvara |

ഭീഷ്മൻ പറഞ്ഞു—നരേശ്വരാ, ദേഹധാരിയായ ആത്മാവ് എല്ലായ്പ്പോഴും പുണ്യപാപങ്ങളുടെ (അവയുടെ ഫലങ്ങളുടെ) സ്വതന്ത്ര അധിപതി അല്ല. മറിച്ച്, അതേ കർമങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുയരുന്ന സംസ്കാരരൂപമായ അന്ധകാരത്തിൽ അത് മൂടപ്പെടുകയും നിയന്ത്രിതമാകുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു; ആ മറവിനടിയിൽ സുഖദുഃഖങ്ങൾ അനുഭവിക്കുന്നു.

Educational Q&A

The jīva (embodied self) is not fully autonomous in experiencing pleasure and pain; it is constrained by the karmic impressions arising from merit and sin, which function like tamas (ignorance/darkness) that veils discernment and drives experience.
