Yudhiṣṭhira’s Remorse and Vyāsa’s Teaching on Impermanence (Śoka-nivāraṇa)

सुखं दुःखान्तमालस्यं दाक्ष्यं दुः:खं सुखोदयम्‌ । भूति: श्रीद्वीर्धृति: कीर्तिर्देक्षे वसति नालसे,आलस्य सुखरूप प्रतीत होता है, परंतु उसका अन्त दु:ख है तथा कार्यदक्षता दुःखरूप प्रतीत होती है, परंतु उससे सुखका उदय होता है। इसके सिवा ऐश्वर्य, लक्ष्मी, लज्जा, धृति और कीर्ति--ये कार्यदक्ष पुरुषमें ही निवास करती हैं, आलसीमें नहीं

sukhaṁ duḥkhāntam ālasyaṁ dākṣyaṁ duḥkhaṁ sukhodayam | bhūtiḥ śrīr dhṛtiḥ kīrtir dakṣe vasati nālase ||

വ്യാസൻ പറഞ്ഞു—ആലസ്യം സുഖംപോലെ തോന്നുമെങ്കിലും അതിന്റെ അവസാനം ദുഃഖമാണ്; പ്രവർത്തിദക്ഷതയും പരിശ്രമവും ആദ്യം ദുഃഖംപോലെ തോന്നുമെങ്കിലും അതിൽ നിന്നാണ് സുഖോദയം. ഐശ്വര്യം, ലക്ഷ്മി, ധൃതി, കീർത്തി—ഇവ കഴിവും അധ്വാനവും ഉള്ളവനോടെയാണ് വസിക്കുന്നത്; ആലസനോടല്ല.
