Kapila and Syūmaraśmi on Renunciation, Householder Support, and Epistemic Authority
समौ तावपि मे स्यातां न हि मे<स्ति प्रियाप्रियम् । एतदीदृशकं धर्म प्रशंसन्ति मनीषिण:
samau tāv api me syātāṃ na hi me 'sti priyāpriyam | etad īdṛśakaṃ dharmaṃ praśaṃsanti manīṣiṇaḥ ||
അവർ ഇരുവരും എനിക്ക് ഒരുപോലെ; എനിക്ക് പ്രിയ-അപ്രിയ ഭേദമില്ല. പണ്ഡിതന്മാർ ഇത്തരത്തിലുള്ള ധർമ്മത്തെയാണ് പ്രശംസിക്കുന്നത്.
तुलाधार उवाच
True dharma is grounded in inner equanimity and discernment: one should evaluate an action by its intention (hetu) and outcome (pariṇāma), and avoid attachment/aversion. The wise praise a mind that remains the same toward praise and harm.
In the Tulādhāra–Jājali discourse of Śānti Parva, Tulādhāra instructs the ascetic Jājali. Here he describes his own practiced neutrality: those who praise him and those who injure him are equal to him, illustrating the ethical ideal he recommends.
