Educational Q&A

The verse presents a foundational triad—intellect/knowledge (jñāna or buddhi), bodily heat (ūṣmā), and vital wind (vāyu/prāṇa)—as the coordinating basis of embodied functioning. From this triad emerge the senses and their objects, mind and consciousness, vital currents like prāṇa and apāna, and the body’s transformations and constituents, implying that ethical self-mastery begins with understanding the roots of perception and action.

In Śānti Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma and the nature of the self and body. Here he shifts into an analytical account of embodied life, explaining how core principles generate the faculties and processes that drive human action, supporting the broader teaching on restraint, insight, and right conduct.
