Adhyāya 180: Jīva, Śarīra, and the Fire Analogy (भृगु–भरद्वाज संवादः)

बहुकथितमिदं हि बुद्धिमद्धिः कविभिरपि प्रथयद्धिरात्मकीर्तिम्‌ । इदमिदमिति तत्र तत्र हन्‍्त स्वपरमतैर्गहनं प्रतर्कयद्धि:ः,“अपनी कीर्तिका विस्तार करनेवाले विद्वानों और बुद्धिमानोंने अपने और दूसरोंके मतसे गहन तर्क और वितर्क करके 'ऐसे करना चाहिये" 'ऐसे करना चाहिये” इत्यादि कहकर इस व्रतकी अनेक प्रकारसे व्याख्या की है

bahukathitam idaṁ hi buddhimadbhiḥ kavibhir api prathayadbhir ātmakīrtim | idam idam iti tatra tatra hanta svaparamataiḥ gahanaṁ pratarkayadbhiḥ ||

ഭീഷ്മൻ പറഞ്ഞു—ഈ വ്രതത്തെ ബുദ്ധിമാനായ പണ്ഡിതരും കവികളും പലവിധത്തിൽ വ്യാഖ്യാനിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്—സ്വകീർത്തി വ്യാപിപ്പിക്കാനുള്ള ആഗ്രഹത്തോടെ. തങ്ങളുടേയും മറ്റുള്ളവരുടേയും മതങ്ങളെ ആശ്രയിച്ച് ഗഹനമായ തർക്ക-പ്രതിതർക്കങ്ങൾ നടത്തി, ഇടം ഇടമായി “ഇങ്ങനെ ചെയ്യണം, ഇങ്ങനെ ചെയ്യണം” എന്നു അവർ ആവർത്തിക്കുന്നു.
