अव्यक्त-मानस-सृष्टिवादः

Doctrine of Creation from the Unmanifest ‘Mānasa’

स्नेहपाशैर्बहुविधैराविष्टविषया जना: । अकृतार्थाश्न सीदन्ते जलै: सैकतसेतव:,मनुष्य नाना प्रकारके स्नेह-बन्धनोंमें बँधे हुए हैं, अतः वे सदा विषयोंकी आसक्तिसे घिरे रहते हैं; इसीलिये जैसे बालूद्वारा बनाये हुए पुल जलके वेगसे बह जाते हैं, उसी प्रकार उन मनुष्योंकी विषयकामना सफल नहीं होती; जिससे वे दुःख पाते रहते हैं

snehapāśair bahuvidhair āviṣṭaviṣayā janāḥ | akṛtārthāś ca sīdanti jalaiḥ saikataseṭavaḥ ||

ബ്രാഹ്മണൻ പറഞ്ഞു—ജനങ്ങൾ പലവിധ സ്നേഹബന്ധനങ്ങളിൽ കുടുങ്ങി വിഷയാസക്തിയിൽ ചുറ്റപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ട് അവരുടെ ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങൾ സഫലമാകാതെ അവർ ദുഃഖത്തിൽ താഴ്ന്നുപോകുന്നു—വെള്ളത്തിന്റെ പ്രചണ്ഡവേഗത്തിൽ മണൽപ്പാലങ്ങൾ ഒലിച്ചുപോകുന്നതുപോലെ.

Educational Q&A

Attachment (sneha) binds people in many ways and keeps them trapped in sense-objects (viṣaya). Because such pursuits are unstable and easily destroyed, one’s aims remain unfulfilled, leading to sorrow; the verse urges detachment and steadiness of purpose.

In a didactic passage of the Śānti Parva, a Brahmin speaker instructs by using a vivid simile: people entangled in worldly affections are like sand-bridges that cannot withstand the force of water—so their worldly desires collapse and they suffer.
