Vaiśampāyana uvāca: ity uktavati Bhīṣme tu tūṣṇīṁ-bhūte Yudhiṣṭhiraḥ | papracchāvasathaṁ gatvā bhrātṝn Vidura-pañcamān ||

വൈശമ്പായനൻ പറഞ്ഞു—ജനമേജയ! ഇങ്ങനെ പറഞ്ഞ ശേഷം ഭീഷ്മൻ മൗനമായപ്പോൾ, രാജാവ് യുധിഷ്ഠിരൻ തന്റെ വസതിയിലേക്കു പോയി തന്റെ നാലു സഹോദരന്മാരോടും—അഞ്ചാമനായി വിദുരനോടും—ചോദ്യം ചെയ്തു. ഭീഷ്മോപദേശത്തിനു ശേഷമുള്ള ഈ നിമിഷം ഒരു ആത്മപരിശോധനാ വിരാമം; ധർമ്മം, അർത്ഥം, കാമം എന്നീ വിഷയങ്ങളിൽ ശരിയായ വഴി തെളിയാൻ തന്റെ അടുത്ത വൃത്തത്തിൽ ഉപദേശം തേടുന്നതായിരുന്നു.
